Communicating Sound

A Writing Workshop for High School Musicians

Summer 2022

This workshop with BKT Education, originally developed with music educator Chris Graham is designed to help young musicians become better writers and communicators. Whether they are bound for a conservatory or college, students will benefit both as musicians and as learners when they engage with music critically. Routinely, professional musicians are called upon to talk and write about their work. From putting together grant applications, press releases, and program notes, to giving pre-concert talks and interviews, good writing and communication skills make a performer stand out. Gaining command of academic and professional styles of communication will help students discover a confident style and tone that sets them apart.

Students will walk away with the abilities to:

  • Contextualize performance in a compelling and concise way

  • Communicate with diverse audiences

  • Engage critically with culture

  • Advocate for the arts

This 8-week workshop includes 4 group sessions and individual office hours in between these sessions advise students on their individual projects. Each session features guided writing time, discussions, and interactive projects to help students think more methodically about music, culture, and performance. The transferable skills students gain from this workshop will give them an edge as they move forward in their performance careers, to college, and beyond.
